Colonel Norman Dane Vaughan (December 18, 1905 – December 23, 2005) was a renowned American dogsled driver, explorer, and U.S. Army Colonel. He gained early fame participating in Admiral Byrd's first expedition to the South Pole (1928–1930), where a mountain was named in his honor. Vaughan also served as a dogsled driver in WWII search and rescue and later competed in 13 Iditarod races after moving to Alaska. Known for his enduring spirit and adventures, he lived to celebrate his 100th birthday.
